Automotive design | Interaction Design | Granstudio Reset | 2019 - Ongoing
Defining a more immersive UX-driven design approach.
Granstudio is conducting an ongoing research project: RESET, aimed at exploring the potential of Phygital Design in terms of process, use, and aesthetics.
Experience driven Process
The core of this project is defining a different approach to the automotive design process. Starting from solid user research and a definition of the user journey, ideas are generated about desired interactions and experiences. This is done both ‘behind the desk’ and through VR workshop sessions with fast prototypes that allow the designers to experience the ideas. It’s that experience that then becomes the backbone for the definition of content and the development of the design and styling.
Using Digiphy /1: a powerful tool for Layout definition
DigiPHY allows verifying, comparing, and benchmarking different ergonomics and layouts.
The addition of CNC-milled parts allows making also physical verifications. The preferred positions and ergonomic values can be saved with the DigiPHY software, creating a solid and tested base for the definition of the vehicle package and layout. The package data is translated into a 3D model that serves as a basis for the development of UX/UI narrative and content.
A novel interaction concept can dramatically reshape the design layout. Here, the desire for enhanced transparency and connectivity with the outside led to a fresh window layout with a low belt-line that harvests external light, becoming a secondary layer of user interaction.
Using Digiphy /2: Designing the beauty in interactions
Delving into the realm of interactions to discover a new sense of pleasure and aesthetics.
Reset’s design is a direct illustration of the approach, with a quick one-on-one translation of the interaction ideas into shape. The goal is to explore ways to create designs that generate fulfillment through the sophistication of their interaction rather than through the complexity of their shapes.

Designing with material qualities
The focus of interior design lays on using material qualities and not only intricate shapes to generate visual interest.
Working with materials before starting to sketch helps to create shapes that maximise the aesthetic potential of materials. The sophistication and feeling of the material can then allow us to make very simple shapes that still offer a very rich and sensual experience.
In today's automotive industry, the symbiotic relationship between interior car design, user interaction (UI), and color, material, and finish (CMF) selection has never been more crucial. Designing these elements in tandem ensures a harmonious and cohesive experience. When interior design, user interface, and CMF are synchronized, the result is not just aesthetically pleasing; it enhances user engagement, functionality, and overall satisfaction.
